The Before & After!
I know this is no home décor/DIY blog. But I was so proud of my first “Ikea hack” (a way of customizing affordable, basic Ikea items to customize it) that I shared a photo on social media and got a lot of questions about how I did it and which Ikea piece I used. I wanted to share the info so that other people can see how quick and easy it was to create a more unique piece for my living room.
I had been looking for the right coffee table for years but didn’t like the price tag some of my favourite pieces came with. The reality with renting is that I could invest in a great piece that may not fit in my next apartment. I spotted the VITTSJÖ nesting tables on the Ikea website and realized they were exactly what I needed but in the wrong colour.
Total budget: $84.99
- VITTSJÖ table: $69.99 at Ikea
- Metallic gold spray paint: $10 (I used 2 cans that I picked up from Walmart)
- Marble effect paper: $5 (I managed to find some at the Dollar Store of all places, but they also sell this vinyl adhesive paper at Rona)
Step 1: Lay out all of the metal pieces and spray paint gold. I recommend two coats! Let sit to dry at least 24 hours.
Step 2: To achieve the marble effect on the bottom part of the table, purchase some craft or wrapping paper to cover the plain white base. The one I used has a sticker backing so I applied it slowly and carefully and wrapped the excess around the bottom. There are also lots of painting tutorials online too but I like the idea of the paper that I can take off and replace if I need to.
Step 3: Assemble the table. I didn’t screw the bottom piece in so that I can easily take the table apart to refresh the spray paint if needed.
Step 4: Sit back and enjoy!
I still have to find the right pieces to sit on top of the table and a small area rug for underneath, but I’m loving how easily this brightened up my living room and gave it a bit of extra glam (sorry Moe)!
