Are you the type to set resolutions? While the practice can seem forced and corny to some, I think it’s important to set every day, month, and year with a specific intention. It’s important to have goals to work towards at any time of the year. We’re not talking major changes here, but more ways to improve life and help me reach my goals.
Last year I resolved to take more time for me, say no to more things, and cut the friendship fat so that I only surrounded myself with positive people who were on “Team Jamie”. Looking back on the past year I am proud of the goals I met and the ones I’ve worked towards meeting.
This year, I’m making my resolutions a bit more stimulating. Here’s what I’m thinking:
I always make sure to visit New York and Montreal as regularly as I possibly can, but next year I’m hoping to cross off a few more destinations off my list including Vancouver and Portland this spring and a few other major U.S. cities throughout the summer and fall. I’ve always wanted to visit Chicago and Boston, but I’m keeping my mind open to any travel opportunities next year will bring!
I’ve recently taken up running and despite an annoying knee injury that I’m working through with a physiotherapist (helllooooo this year’s self care resolution!), I have also signed up for a 10k race in May. Once given the go-ahead from my knee doc, I’m looking forward to starting training again! Having the 10k goal in mind will give me the perfect motivation to start training again.
Learn How to Relax
I don’t do a very good job of “turning off.” My idea of relaxing sometimes involves a deep cleaning of my apartment or doing some writing. While both are useful and therapeutic, they really don’t help me turn off or relax. Next year I resolve to book that massage appointment. Order room service. Wear that white robe! Turn off!
Next year I am committed to improving my public speaking skills. I’m signing up for some public speaking courses and seminars (more on those later!) and will be practicing with more speaking roles at conferences and the like. And who knows, maybe I’ll be teaching my own course within the next year!
