App Review: Pay at Restaurants with Tab

“Would you pay your restaurant bill with an app?”

I asked myself, and my Twitter followers, the same question last week when I saw a tweet about Tab on my timeline. The truth is, a lot of my restaurant experiences can be transformed (and not in a positive way) by having to wait to pay my bill. The whole process can be long and frustrating, especially if you add the extra step of having to pay by debit or credit and wait for them to bring the machine to your table. I decided to try Tab for myself to see if it was easier and how it affected my dining experience.

Happy Hooker Tab

Tab was incredibly easy to use, and I loved that the restaurant knew what I was talking about as soon as I mentioned the app. My date and I were able to finish our meal, pay, and leave at our own pace and our server was able to focus on providing great service to other tables without standing around waiting for us to use a debit machine. The experience was seamless, and there was absolutely nothing about the experience that would prevent me from using it again!

How It Works

1. Visit a Tab restaurant.

You can check if a restaurant is on Tab using the app and checking what is nearby or check to see if your favourite restaurants have signed up yet. Tab gives participating restaurants an iPad to use Tab to make sure they have everything they need to accept payments through the app.

I paid a visit to one of my favourite seafood spots, Happy Hooker. They have great food and the service is always friendly and fast.

2. Tell your server you’re paying with Tab.

You can also pay for other guests at your table at the same time.

2. (b) Enjoy your food!

I love almost everything on the Happy Hooker menu so I brought a friend to share everything with. We shared tacos, baja fries, oysters, and the shrimp po boy. I swear I had dreams about how good my food was, and that’s coming from a girl who just got back from 11 days in Nova Scotia living off seafood.

3. Pay your bill.

I got a notification on my phone when my bill was ready and didn’t have to wait for the server to come by.

Tab App Review

I opened my app and paid, and then was prompted to leave a review of my server. I loved this extra feature as it was a direct way to leave feedback on my experience. Servers also claim that the personalization also has helped improve their tips!

Once you pay through the app you also get a receipt emailed to you. I thought this was incredibly helpful for expense tracking, especially for people who can email receipts directly into their accounting software.
