Last weekend I enjoyed a relaxing and fun weekend at a resort just two hours outside of Toronto. Viamede is now open to the public after undergoing renovations throughout the winter. The historic resort on the shores of Stoney Lake, just outside of Peterborough, has a lot to offer for a weekend away! I have to say, I have never experienced a weekend like this without leaving Ontario.
After a busy work week I opted to treat my weekend at Viamede as the perfect opportunity to relax, catch up on some zzzzz’s, and just generally unwind. Viamede’s pool, calm beach, hot tub, sauna, and lounge chairs were perfect to enjoy the spring-like weather. In the summer, poolside smoothies and daquiris are available. Most rooms offer fireplaces to cozy up in front of and patios with your own private barbeque. Viamede is also home to a full service spa offering everything from massages and facial treatments to manicures and pedicures.
I spent an excessive amount of time laying in my massive king sized bed enjoying the warm breeze through my open patio doors. I also spent a lot of time at the Boathouse Pub which offers live music, food, and cold craft beers with a great view of the lake.
Not the type of person who likes to relax? Viamede Resort has tons to do for those that can’t sit still, including a frisbee golf course, a farm to explore, and 6 km of nature trails open year round to enjoy the natural scenery and look out for wildlife. The front desk also suggested an afternoon of geo-caching which I wish I had time to try for myself! You can also explore the waterfront on a kayak or canoe at no extra charge or enjoy swimming in the pool or the lake.
Viamede’s three restaurants mean there is absolutely no way that you can’t find something to eat. The Boathouse Pub includes a menu of traditional pub-fare, a full dining room that hosts an ever-changing menu of entree-style dishes, and the Inn at Mount Julian provides a fine dining experience including over 100 different wine options.
All items on the menu are carefully curated by the Executive Chef who uses seasonal vegetables, local produce, and meat directly from animals that live at the Viamede farm.
On Saturday evening we enjoyed a pig roast dinner, which the resort hosts throughout the summer for guests. There were plenty of options for vegetarians as well as those of us who eat gluten-free (ahem).
One of the selling features of Viamede for me personally is how pet-friendly the resort is. Not only are pet guests encouraged, but the resort has its very own dog, Toby who helps greet guests in the lobby and can sometimes be found jumping in the lake for an afternoon swim. The resort also features an off-leash dog park and these charming dog-friendly rooms and cottages.
I had an amazing weekend away at Viamede Resort and can’t wait to go back later this summer – with Moe in tow, of course!
