In my world, brunching is not an activity taken lightly. The brunch spots in my neighbourhood often have waits of over an hour. Deciding on the perfect time to try to get a table and having the right amount of people to ensure speedy seating at each spot is all part of the game. Some spots require you to wait outside, hovering in the current weather conditions lest your name be called and you don’t answer within 0.4 seconds, and others require a precise ordering technique akin to Seinfeld’s infamous Soup Nazi.
And then there are warm, welcoming places like Boom. I remember the first time I discovered brunch at Boom: it was raining and a friend and I wanted good food without any pretentiousness. We didn’t want to wait in the rain for 2 hours for table and we didn’t want snooty service from a plaid-donning hipster who had been up til brunch service started chugging the weight of her Doc Martens in PBR.
When we arrived at Boom we were welcomed inside to a short line. This is where their service immediately set Boom apart from the rest and we were offered pastry treats and hot coffee or tea while we waited. Once seated, the variety on the extensive menu meant that everyone in my brunching group (which usually includes one gluten intolerance, one vegetarian, and one almost-vegan) would leave happy and full. The menu boasts everything from omelettes, eggs benedict, french toast, pancakes, and fresh waffles, to healthier options, smoothies, breakfast sandwiches, salads, and wraps.
My favourite dishes are the breakfast burrito, eggs benny with smoked salmon, any of the omelettes or waffles, and the breakfast panino.
Even Boom’s smoothie menu is hard to decide on from fresh fruits to espresso-based concoctions (I bet you can guess which one I usually go for)!
Two years after discovering Boom, it’s still one of my go-to brunch spots in my neighbourhood and guarantees quick and super-friendly service, fresh non-greasy food, and extra drool marks on my Sunday best.
Boom is celebrating its 10th anniversary this January! In its 10 years, Boom has grown to four locations in Toronto and the GTA while still maintaining great service and a relaxed vibe.
