Starting last summer, the nail art craze has taken Toronto by storm. And while I’ll admit I’m a bit of a sucker for crazy patterns and designs, I just can’t afford the upkeep and my nails need to play quadruple duty most days to get me from work, meetings, events, and fun with friends. When I heard that The Ten Spot was offering Gel Nail Art and the designs were looking very fun yet professional I knew I had to try it out for myself!
I have been a loyal fan of The Ten Spot since I first discovered their Queen West location. It’s where I take my mom for mani/pedis when she’s in town, recommend to my friends for waxing, and it’s where my childhood best friend told me she was pregnant over bottles of red (polish). And as I’ve been watching The Ten Spot grow and open new franchises around the city, I have been patiently waiting for my west end neighbourhood’s time to shine. Thanks to new owner, Jennifer, the vibrant community of Roncesvalles is home to the newest Ten Spot location!
The Ten Spot uses OPI Gel Colour polish which cures in under 30 seconds under safe to use LED lamps!
Why I love gel polish: once it cures under the LED lamp it’s totally dry which means I’d have to try really hard to ruin my new mani after I leave. I also love how shiny my mani stays (keeps it looking fresh) and it lasts up to 3 weeks despite the fact that my hands and nails take a beating every day.
My Gel Nail Art Mani
Unlike a lot of the other popular nail art shops in the city, The Ten Spot gives you a full manicure prior to your nail art application. Even though I was with the Roncesvalles location’s nail art goddess (their words, my experience!), my hands were pampered and prepared for my polish as they would be for any other manicure.
I find that I’m constantly walking the line between being girly and being taken seriously as a female business owner who is constantly pitching clients and getting her hands dirty hosting and setting up for events so I chose to only get the nail art on one accent finger on each hand. I chose a fun mix between army green and mint as the base colour and went with polka dotted accent nails. While the design I chose was quite simple, the girls at The Ten Spot are very capable of much more complex designs! I’m eyeing a great nautical-inspired design for my next trip.
Manicures with gel polish at The Ten Spot cost $50 and a nail art design will run anywhere from an extra $8-15 depending on how complicated the design is.
The end result:
While little to no “upkeep” is required of gel polish I find mine last longer and look better if I apply cuticle oil around my cuticles and directly under my nails before bed every night (which some people do regardless of their manicures). 2+ weeks later and I’m starting to experience some chipping. I’m planning on adding a clear top coat later today to try and get one more week out of this mani!
