Review: Lash Lift from Pretty in the City

On Tuesday night I ventured north of Bloor to Yonge and Eglinton for an appointment to get a “lash lift”. Sure, there are probably closer salon’s that perform the procedure, but I had it on good authority that the lovely girls at Pretty in the City would take good care of me. After a bad experience with eyelash extensions I was adament that my eyes would only be touched by trusted professionals from now on.

Pre-Party

Pretty in the City Lash Lift

When I arrived at Pretty in the City I was asked to fill out a form outlining any sensitivities or allergies pertaining to my skin and eyes. I was escorted to a bathroom and asked to remove my contacts and use a selection of makeup removers and eyelash washes to ensure my eyes and surrounding area were totally clean.

I met my esthetician who explained the process and answered my questions. I wanted to know about the glue they used, if it was harmful if it happened to get in my eye, and how long the process would take. She answered all of my questions and ensured me that the glue was a thick cream that was unlikely to run into my eyes, but if it did in any event, I may feel a slight stinging but my eyes would not be harmed.

The Procedure

A protective pad is placed under your eye to hold down your bottom lashes. The strip is cool and refreshing and not as uncomfortable as I expected. Then silicone pads are glued to your eyelid and your lashed are curled upwards and glued to the pad. Then the perm solution is applied to the roots of your lashes. My job was to lay still and relax – easy!

After 10 minutes, the perm solution is removed, the glue is removed, and your eyelids are thoroughly cleaned. I was expecting my eyes to be puffy and red (as they were after my horrible extension experience) but I looked totally normal – with great lashes!

So let’s be clear:

  • no dyes
  • no extensions, falsies, implants, fakes, nada
  • no eyelash curler necessary for 4-6 weeks

Aftercare

Unlike eyelash extensions, my lash lift requires minimal aftercare. Other than not getting them wet for a full 24 hours, I’m free to treat them like my regular lashes after that! I washed my face (including my eyes) the next night and expected to see a reduction in the amount of lift but it was the same!  I can wear all of the mascara I want and I could even use my eyelash curler if I wanted – but I don’t need to.

My lash lift will last 4-6 weeks depending on how quickly my lashes grow out!

Before and after:

Lash Lift Before & After

You can’t even see my lashes in the first photo! They slant downwards and on first glance (when I’m not wearing mascara) it’s as if  don’t have any at all!

And with Benefit “They’re Real” mascara for an event last night:

Why Lash Lift?

It’s a fairly new procedure and you might be wondering what sort of exercise in vanity this was. I do have long lashes, but they slant straight down towards the ground. I curl them daily (multiple times even) and the only way to hold the curl is by using waterproof mascara every day. Not the best for my eyes or my lashes, and I was losing lashes at an alarming rate. At one point, my eyelash curler chopped off a section of my lashes! I hate the way I look without mascara on and prefer to not even leave the house without it. Sounds kind of high maintenance but everyone has their thing, right?

Lash Lift Toronto Beauty

The lash lift allows me to ditch my eyelash curler as well as the waterproof mascara. In fact, I likely won’t need to put on mascara at all as my eyes already look awake without it.

I would recommend a lash lift to anyone who is looking to save time on the beauty routine or looking to dump their eyelash curler. I wake up with “wide awake” eyes every morning now and don’t worry about looking like I’m missing lashes completely when I run out of the house without mascara on.

Pretty In The City

My experience at Pretty in the City was so positive. Their staff are trained and knowledgable and make sure you are comfortable throughout your entire visit. They explain the process in detail before starting and every single step is explained to you as they go. This is important to me because my eyes are closed throughout the whole process and I like to know what is going on.

Pretty in the City offers the lash lift for only $65 and also recommend a lash tint for those looking for a more dramatic effect ($85 for tint & lift). They also offer nail and makeup services.

This is such a great idea! Thanks for sharing. I hate putting on lashes. I can’t do it myself. I always have to find a makeup person / artist to do it.
True Story: I almost glued my eyeshut.
Thanks for the post. May have to check them out.
