Shellac’d Up at 1BodyBar

To recover from a weekend camping with few showers and lots of sand, lakewater, and bug bites I booked the ultimate girls night for Tuesday evening: a shellac mani/pedi at 1BodyBar followed by drinks with the girls and an evening screening of Magic Mike.

1BodyBar opened a few months ago and is tucked in a cute alleyway off Queen West at Soho Street. They use natural products for all of their services which include makeup, hair, nails, massage, waxing, and tanning. I followed them on Instagram before my appointment and have been really impressed with their services from the photos alone.

1BodyBar uses Nubar (technically a gelicure) which is cruelty free and vegan.  Their products are all free of formaldehyde, toluene, and DBP (phthalate). For all us non-scientists: that ish cray/bad chemicals and you don’t want ’em!

I wasn’t sure if I would like shellac, mostly because I was worried it would ruin my nails underneath or turn them yellow like some cheap polishes tend to do. I was also worried it would feel heavier.

Not being able to change the colour on a whim hasn’t been an inconvenience – actually, not having to touch up my colour for an important meeting or event has been really nice. I also like how the shellac looks very clean, un-chipped, and not bubbly. I’ve got a lot of bumps and grooves in my nails that some manicures only highlight, but with the shellac I got a very even nail shape. The shellac will even retain its shine for the whole 2 weeks that it lasts. I was assured the NuBar line of shellac was totally natural and wouldn’t leave me with yellow fingers when I decide to take the shellac off, so I’ll have to report back on that!

I’m loving the colour on my toes! A nice shiny turquoise.

I would continue getting shellac manicures just for the fact that after it cures for a few seconds under a UV light your nails are dry. I was able to put my shoes on and walk right out of there and meet the girls at Hooters for some pre-movie snacks and drinks.

Disclosure: The lovely folks at Buytopia invited me to try one of their mani/pedi deals and I chose the $25 Shellac Mani/Pedi at 1BodyBar. Opinions, photos, and great nails are all my own.
