Last Wednesday night I joined about 200 other people in the Dog Bowl in Trinity Bellwoods park to watch R Kelly’s Trapped in the Closet.
If you haven’t heard it, Trapped in the Closet is “hip hopera”: a series of 22 songs that tells a story of how R Kelly’s one night stand with a girl he met in a club sets off an unbelievable chain of events including lots of cheating, sex and lying, a midget, a delicious cherry pie and some really entertaining characters. There is a synopsis of each episode (each song is an episode) on Wikipedia (spoiler alert!).
It was a really fun reminder of how quickly the Internet can create a community around nothing more than a shared interest in good times in the park. The crowd was positive and happy to be there. We laughed together through one of the most ridiculous movies (if you can even call it that) for an hour and a half.
A few years ago a d-bag guy I managed when I worked in event planning asked me where he should take a girl for a cute, casual date. I suggested a picnic with wine and snacks at Trinity Bellwoods. He informed me that the park was “full of drug addicts and homeless people” and that he certainly would not be taking his date there. It’s kind of cool that guys like him think that, because the park was just lovely last Wednesday without people like him 🙂
