I’m really excited to be part of the launch of something big in Toronto this summer!
Owning a car in the city is such a hassle and huge expense. I have been toying with the idea of getting a car-sharing membership because there are so many times where I could use a car for just a couple of hours and don’t want to bother with rental rates or begging my friends to take me on my errands. Unfortunately, some of the options for car-sharing in Toronto come with pricey membership fees in addition to a registration fee and I don’t want to feel obligated to use a car in order to get my money’s worth of my membership.

car2go is a flexible solution to urban carsharing and has been a popular option in several cities in Europe, the U.S., and now Canada! car2go launched in Vancouver last summer and has been getting rave reviews in it’s flexibility and affordability as a carsharing option. They are even launching electric cars in some cities in Europe and the U.S.
It works like this: you need a car? You can book one through their app, website, or by making a quick phone call. You can book in advance or for immediate use. They’ll point you to the closest car, conveniently parked throughout the city at Green P Parking lots. You hop in the car and are billed by the minute so you don’t pay for time you don’t use. There is an hourly and a daily maximum cost that is really affordable and you don’t have to tell them how long you intend to keep the car. Drive the car anywhere you want on your own schedule, enjoy free parking and gas while you drive it, and when you’re done you just leave it any other Green P or designated car2go parking lot in the “home area“. It will charge your credit card up to the second you sign out of the car.
It’s only about 35 cents per minute up to a $12.99 per hour maximum. Want it for a full 24 hours? That’s $65.99 maximum charge. Not too shabby when you factor in what parking and gas would have costed for those trips. Your rental includes refueling, cleaning, roadside assistance, GPS navigation, insurance, parking, and a few more perks. Like having a car whenever you need it!
I’ll be booting around the city for a week in one of these baby’s next week to review the service. I’ll certainly be blogging my adventures, but you might want to follow me on Twitter (or any of my other social feeds) for more timely updates as they happen. Follow the hashtag #jamie2go for all of the fun!
The best part: since you only pay for what you use, taking a car for a short trip is no hassle at all. Imagine you decide to check out a concert at the Sound Academy. It’s nearly impossible to get there without taking a cab or an extremely long walk. Hop in the car and park at the Green P lot there and “log out” of the car for while you’re in the venue. When you’re ready to leave, hop in the car again. You are only billed for what you use. If you decided to have a few drinks while you were at the concert you can just leave the car there and take a cab home without worrying about returning it to a specific location or paying to keep it overnight. Get it?! So convenient!
There is a one time sign up fee of $35 to get your snazzy car2go membership card, but I’ll let you in on a little secret:
Enjoy free registration and 30 minutes of drive time by using promo code: TDOT right now!
I’m encouraging all of my friends to register now while it’s free so your membership is ready to go whenever you need it.
