Since early this year I have been volunteering my writing and Internetting skills with Annex Cat Rescue as a Communications volunteer. I have live tweeted a feral feeding and am in the midst of writing some articles for their website. Two weeks ago I attended a feral trapping training session so that I can also help trap cats for Annex Cat Rescue’s Trap Neuter and Release program and write about that process. You can always find me online posting content to their Pinterest, Facebook, and Twitter accounts. I’m learning some really innovative ways to use social media for an animal rescue!
Tons of people have asked me why I volunteer with ACR and the answer is simple: I love animals! But, I live in a small one bedroom apartment and with one cat and one dog and I’m at my personal limit of how many pets I can give my attention to and afford to feed. I would love to foster but that’s just not something I can do right now. I can’t transport the cats to vet appointments or foster homes because I don’t own a car. The best thing I can do is put my social media expertise to good use to help build our community!
I chose Annex Cat Rescue because of the real sense of community they foster in Toronto (they don’t just operate in the Annex!). I’m helping build that community and network of animal lovers and animal welfare volunteers and I couldn’t be more proud to work with such amazing passionate people! It turns out cat people are pretty darn cool 😉
Maybe you’ve considered volunteering too? There are a number of ways to help, from trapping, feeding, and helping with transportation or volunteering at events.
If you’re at all interested in volunteering or if you’re just a big supporter of the work ACR does, I invite you to attend the General Meeting with me on Thursday June, 28, 2012 from 6-8pm at Volunteer Toronto.
Please feel free to contact me or message in the comments for more information.
