Once upon a blog…

I’ve always kept a personal (read: private) blog. I like to track my memories and feelings and be able to look back on them. It’s amazing how so many things that I have done that seem so important at the time are so quickly forgotten. I love the Internet and the abundance of information it allows me to consume every day but sometimes I feel like there are so many things I’ve learned in a day fighting for long and short-term rental space in my brain that my valuables are being pushed off the shelves in there.

This is why I blog.

I blog publicly now under “Jamie-Leigh T.O.” in an attempt to write a different kind of blog. Of course, my main priority is to document my memories and, albeit more rare, my feelings. I like looking back through my previous posts and my #weekendwrapup’s to see what I’ve been up to. I like looking at pictures I thought were funny or links to articles and websites that I wanted to remember.

I have also noticed that I have become a source of information for my friends IRL and online. People are always asking me for recommendations on everything from music, movies, restaurants, coffee shops, clothing stores, brands they should (or shouldn’t support), social media trends, beauty products, EVERYTHING!! I like to share my personal insight and give recommendations based on my experiences and what I have tried.

That’s why sometimes you may see me talking about a specific brand or product on my blog. I promise to always be transparent here. While I currently am not being paid to promote anything, I am not opposed to the idea of working with brands and companies if it’s for a product that I am interested in and I think you will be interested in too.

Finally, I have to admit that there is some sort of an ulterior motive to blogging. While I have always nurtured my love for reading and writing, the importance of having documented writing samples has proved valuable in my transition into the world of social media and communications and (I hope) eventually public relations. While I’m sure most employers do not care in the slightest about what I did last weekend or that time I met Travis Snider, they may care that I have the skills and abilities to put a website or blog together, create content for an audience, or even review restaurants and comment on current trends in social media. While the writing in my blog does not highlight my professional writing abilities, it serves as a small window into my general capabilities and interests.

In a move towards increased creativity and maybe a little professionalism, I have moved my blog from WordPress.com to my very own domain. I would have preferred www.jamieleigh.com, but it seems someone beat me to my namesake. It’s kind of a blessing in disguise because I feel like Toronto has really helped shape my identity at this point in my life which is why I added the “T.O.” to the end of my name.

This is my own little corner of the internet. Come by anytime, share your thoughts in the comments, prop your feet up and maybe bookmark me if you want to remember where I live.

And they all blogged happily ever after…

Good point–blogging can be used to bolster a resume and show employers that the author has creativity that translates into appealing work.

And nicely done with your site.
